The Irish Times Book of the 1916 Rising by Shane Hegarty and Fintan O'Toole

The Irish Times Book of the 1916 Rising by Shane Hegarty and Fintan O'Toole
This is a gripping and extremely informative Irish book covering the momentous events of Easter 1916 in day by day accounts. Shane Hegarty and Fintan O'Toole focus on the events of the Easter Rising itself, rather than the background and the consequences. The 1916 Rising re-creates the actual course of events during that tumultuous week, based on contemporary witnesses, memoirs and later recollections. It adds up to the most comprehensive and accessible account of Easter Week in print. More

The Concise History of Modern Ireland by Richard Killeen

The Concise History of Modern Ireland by Richard Killeen
In 1780, Ireland was a pre-modern society. Then, under the twin effects of the industrial revolution and the French revolution, the whole world was turned upside down and Ireland with it. What followed were events like the 1798 Rebellion, the Famine of the 1840's and the industrial revolution, leading to the separation of most of Ireland from the UK. This is complicated history made simple, but not dumbed down. An interesting Irish book for people interested in Irish history.

'A Bottle of Guinness Please'

'A Bottle of Guinness Please'
The colourful history of Guinness By David Hughes (ex Guinness brewer)

This is an important new Guinness book on the early brewing, bottling and brand history from 1830 up to the present day. It is a major reference work researched from the Brewery archives in London and Dublin, full of interesting brewing, bottling and trade facts. Guinness's Stout, can claim to be the most famous beer brand in the world with a rich history that spans over 250 years, migrating from Ireland, first to mainland Britain and thence around the world. No other beer can claim to have had over 12,000 bottlers and be sold in 140,000 outlets. Every bottler had their own label and there have been more designs of Guinness labels than for any other brewer.

There are wonderful stories, like the dropping into the Atlantic Ocean of 150,000 bottles, each with a message placed inside. The intention was that they should bob along on the ocean currents and wash up on the east coast of Canada, North and South America, which they did for the next 20 years. Some 50 or more ended up inside the Arctic Circle to be found by Inuit people 40 years later. Then there was the invention in the 1950s of a sticky secret blending ingredient which allowed Foreign Guinness to be brewed outside of Dublin. Another blending ingredient was formulated, which when added to locally brewed lager, transformed it into Guinness's Foreign Extra Stout. Also, discover the champagne bottles containing Guinness Stout, which are sitting nicely chilled 12,600 feet down, on the bottom of the North Atlantic, in the wreck of the Titanic.

This is a wonderfully illustrated book about how Guinness was brewed over a 200 year period and what type of equipment was used. The legacy of the Park Royal brewery and Guinness Overseas development is reviewed. The world-wide trade conducted by the Victorian export bottlers up to the formation of Guinness Exports Ltd is explored in detail. This book will appeal to those who love beer and the Guinness brand, brewers, breweriania collectors, labologists, brewery history buffs and Guinness employees.

This is a 1.7kg reference book with hard glossy cover, thread sewn for long life (not glued) with 304 A4 pages and over 500 colour illustrations of old photos, labels, early advertisements, graphs, drawings and many fabulous collectables. It contains masses of facts previously unpublished.
