Ireland Remembered

This fine print shows two fishermen in their boat somewhere off the West Coast of Ireland setting creels for the lobster.

Here's a scene from a while back, but, apart from the smoking, one that you will still find today - a scatter of pints and an impromptu session in full swing.

A couple stroll along a West Coast beach in a romantic scene from the late ninteenth/early twentieth century.

This painting celebrates the ancient and traditional Irish craft, the curragh a boat skillfully made from a light wooden fame over which was a hull of either animal skin or, more lately, oiled canvas. Used all around the Irish coast it had the benefit of being stong enough to take a crew out to sea fishing and wonderfully light on land.

Here's a scene from a very rural Ireland of the 50s/60s. The farmer shearing the sheep by hand in front of the poor family farm - turf at the door, while his two sons intently watch to soak up the skill.
